1987年に『週刊少年ジャンプ』（集英社）で掲載された読切『WIZARD!! ～爆炎の征服者～』が話題になり、翌1988年から連載化されると、またたく間に男女問わず爆発的な人気を集め、累計発行部数3000万部を超える萩原一至原作の『BASTARD‼－暗黒の破壊神－』。
王道のエンタメ性と斬新で壮大な設定を併せ持つストーリー、圧倒的なファンタジー世界観、ソード＆ソーサリーの要素を持つ迫力あるバトル、当時の少年誌では少し過激かとも思わせるキュートなヒロインたちのセクシー描写。そんな魅力あふれるストーリー＆キャラクターを密度の濃い画力で描いた本作は「ダークファンタジー漫画の始祖であり金字塔」とも名高く、後の数々のファンタジー作品に影響を与えてきた。
監督には『ゴブリンスレイヤー』でダークファンタジーを見事に描いた、尾崎隆晴。
シリーズ構成には『僕のヒーローアカデミア』ほか、数々のジャンプ作品を手掛ける、黒田洋介。
制作スタジオは『東京リベンジャーズ』で勢いに乗るライデンフィルム、ほか豪華スタッフ陣が集結。

In 1987, Kazushi Hagiwara’s one-off story Wizard!! Conqueror of Explosive Flames was published in Weekly Shonen Jump (Shueisha). In response to rave reviews, BASTARD‼ -Heavy Metal, Dark Fantasy- started serialization the following year and instantly became a huge hit among and men and women alike. To date, over 30 million copies of the manga have been published.
The work is classic entertainment at its finest: a grand and unique story, compelling fantasy world, intense battles full of sword & sorcery, and cute heroines that were probably a bit too risqué for a young boys’ comic back then. All this paired with the manga’s elaborate artwork make Bastard!! the pioneer and pinnacle of dark fantasy manga, influencing countless works that followed.
Taking the director’s chair is Takaharu Ozaki, whose experience with dark fantasy in Goblin Slayer makes him a perfect choice. Story editor Yosuke Kuroda, a Jump veteran whose works include My Hero Academia, and production studio Liden Films of Tokyo Revengers fame will be joined by an all-star production crew.
